Some of Africa’s densest populations of large mammals live within its 600-metre-high walls. Thousands of zebra, buffalo, wildebeest and Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle feed on the mineral-rich grass. Ngorongoro crater is one of the only areas where you are guaranteed to see the endangered black rhino; a small population lives in the protected environment and they are thriving. Inside the crater you will also encounter leopards and fabulous black-manned lions.
Flamingos can also be seen feeding on the soda waters of Lake Makat. Over 500 bird species can also be seen in the crater and Ngorongoro highlands. The Ngorongoro Highlands is a popular destination for walking safari enthusiasts
